Collectible Silver Eagle Coins Canceled for 2009

The American Silver Eagle has been issued by the US Mint since the series was launched in 1986. Each coin contains one ounce of .999 fine silver with its weight and purity guaranteed by the government. There have been collectible versions of the coin offered in addition to the standard bullion issue. During 2009, high demand for silver bullion resulted in the cancellation of the collector versions of the coins. The situation threatens to persist into the coming year.

The bullion version of the coin is distributed by the United States Mint through their authorized purchaser network. These large scale buyers purchase the coins directly based on the price of silver plus a fixed mark up. The authorized purchasers distribute the coins to other bullion dealers and sell the coins to the public, and provide an outlet for resale.

The American Silver Eagle collector coins have recently been offered in two different versions, proof or uncirculated. The proof coins feature a cameo like appearance created through a specialized minting process. The raised design elements are frosted and the background fields are mirrored. The uncirculated coins are struck on burnished blanks and carry the “W” mint mark for West Point.

Legally, the United States Mint is required to produce the bullion coins in quantities sufficient to meet full public demand. Unfortunately, there is no such legal requirement to produce the collector versions of the coins. Due to the limited number of precious metals blanks, the US Mint was forced to prioritize the production of the bullion coins.

The United States Mint announced in October 2009 that they were officially canceling the 2009 Proof Silver Eagle and 2009 Uncirculated Silver Eagle. The reason cited was the often quoted sections of the law, which require the production of bullion coins in quantities to meet public demand. As consolation, the Mint stated that they hoped to resume production of collector coins in 2010 if they could increase the supply of precious metals blanks.

The US Mint was recently forced to suspend the sale of silver bullion coins amidst another surge in demand. Sales to authorized purchasers were resumed shortly thereafter, but under an allocation program, which limited the number of coins that could be purchased. Collectors are hoping that the US Mint can reverse the situation soon so that the 2010 collector coins may be produced.

Overview of the major currency pairs' performance in December:

EUR/USD - went down steeply in December, posting only a slight consolidation close to the end of the month. The currency pair maxed out at 1.5140 on December 3, posted its monthly minimum at 1.4216 on December 22 and ended that month at 1.4330.

GBP/USD - declined during the major part of the month, but ended not far from the month's Open value. The highest level was at 1.6720 on December 3, while the lowest - 1.5831 on December 30. GBP/USD finished December at 1.6144.

USD/JPY - had a strong uptrend during almost all trading days of December. The pair went as high as 93.13 on December 31, ending the month at its monthly maximum; the lowest level was at 86.15 on December 1 - a perfect uptrend, I would say.

EUR/JPY - moved in a choppy sideways manner during the month. The monthly high was at 134.54 on December 4, the monthly low - at 127.40 on December 18. Trading ended at 133.48 for this pair.

GBP/JPY - moved similarly to EUR/JPY but eventually rose in monthly perspective. The maximum level for this pair was at 150.67 on December 31, while the minimum - at 141.61 on December 1. December trading ended not far from the monthly high - at 150.36.

Fundamental background of the month:

The markets continued to remain under the influence of the Dubai World's technical default situation, but the positive indicators from U.S. (except for the housing market) helped both stocks and the dollar, while the yen was strongly bearish on the fiscal and budget policies issued by Tokyo.

Interest rate changes in December:

Australia - from 3.5% to 3.75%.
Denmark - from 1.25% to 1.2%.
Norway - from 1.5% to 1.75%.
Hungary - from 6.5% to 6.25%.
Russia - from 9% to 8.75%.
